how to cook a roast chicken uk

How long does it take to roast a whole chicken?

When we buy a whole chicken from the supermarket, it always says on the packet 45 minutes per kg plus an extra 20 minutes, so I always go by this, and it cooks perfectly each time. So make sure you know how much your chicken weighs before setting your kitchen timer.

How to tell if your chicken is cooked through or not

Get a sharp knife, pull the leg slightly, and pierce the skin in the thickest part. If the juices are clear, you’re good to go. If the juice is pink, stick it back in the oven for at least another 15 minutes, then check again.

For a more accurate testing, use a thermometer and probe the thickest part of the chicken. It should have a reading of 75 C, if it’s below this, then it will need to be cooked for longer.
