Today, French onion soup is a popular dish all over the world. It is often served as a starter or main course and can be found on menus in restaurants of all types. French onion soup is also a popular choice for home cooks, as it is relatively easy to make and can be made ahead of time.
French onion soup is typically made with yellow onions, but white or red onions can also be used. The onions are slowly cooked until they are softened and caramelized. This process can take up to 30 minutes, but it is worth the wait!
After the onions are cooked, the soup is then simmered with beef broth (or chicken or vegetable broth). A variety of seasonings are added at this point, such as salt, and pepper, you could also add thyme, and bay leaf.
Once the soup has finished cooking, it is served in individual bowls with toast with melted cheese on top. The cheese is usually Gruyere or Swiss, but any type of melting cheese will work.

Yes, you can make French onion soup in the slow cooker. The process is similar to making it on the stovetop, but it will take longer since the onions will need to cook on low for several hours.
