French onion soup has a long history, dating back to the Roman Empire. It was traditionally made with onions, water, and vinegar. This basic recipe was later adapted by the French, who added beef broth to the mix. The soup gained popularity in America during the early 20th century when it was introduced by French immigrants.

Today, French onion soup is a popular dish all over the world. It is often served as a starter or main course and can be found on menus in restaurants of all types. French onion soup is also a popular choice for home cooks, as it is relatively easy to make and can be made ahead of time.

French onion soup is typically made with yellow onions, but white or red onions can also be used. The onions are slowly cooked until they are softened and caramelized. This process can take up to 30 minutes, but it is worth the wait!

After the onions are cooked, the soup is then simmered with beef broth (or chicken or vegetable broth). A variety of seasonings are added at this point, such as salt, and pepper, you could also add thyme, and bay leaf.

Once the soup has finished cooking, it is served in individual bowls with toast with melted cheese on top. The cheese is usually Gruyere or Swiss, but any type of melting cheese will work.
