Classic Prawn Cocktail Recipe For Parties
This retro classic prawn cocktail is the perfect recipe starter for entertaining. Very quick and easy to make, yet super tasty. Ideal for light lunches on their own or add to a jacket potato.
WHERE DID PRAWN COCKTAIL ORIGINATE?
In the United Kingdom, the invention of the prawn cocktail is often credited to British television chef Fanny Cradock in the 1960s; however, it is more likely that Cradock popularised her version of an established dish that was not well known until then in Britain

WHAT MAIN MEAL GOES WITH A PRAWN COCKTAIL?
You can add this to a bowl of pasta and eat it either hot or cold. Prawn cocktail is well known to go with jacket potatoes. Add a lovely mixed salad to go with it.
HOW IS THE PRAWN COCKTAIL FLAVOUR MADE?
The prawn cocktail sauce consists of:
- Plain Yoghurt
- Mayonnaise
- Worcestershire Sauce
- Tomato Ketchup
- Horseradish Sauce
- Lemon Juice
WHAT PRAWNS DO I USE FOR THE COCKTAIL?
I buy frozen ready-cooked small prawns and defrost them when I need them. Or you can buy raw prawns and cook them, then leave them to cool. King prawns have more flavour but don’t go as far if you have plenty of mouths to feed.
HOW TO SERVE A PRAWN COCKTAIL?
All you need is a small serving dish such as a ramekin bowl as in the photo, but a more traditional and retro way is to serve it in a cocktail glass. You can also just serve it in a lettuce cup and place it on a fancy plate.
