What makes Swedish meatballs healthy?

There are a few things that make Swedish meatballs healthier than most other meatball recipes. First, they typically use leaner meats like pork and beef, which are lower in saturated fat. Second, they often include healthy ingredients like onions, bread crumbs, and milk. Finally, they’re usually baked or grilled instead of fried.

This easy Swedish meatball recipe is inspired by the popular Ikea dish. It’s made with lean pork, seasoned with onion and salt and ground black pepper, and served with a creamy tomato gravy made from tomatoes and vegetable stock. These meatballs are hearty and satisfying, but much healthier than their traditional counterparts. Serve them over mashed potatoes or egg noodles for a complete meal or simply serve them on their own.

These meatballs are made with pork mince with 5% fat as opposed to the normal fat content consisting of between 12-20% fat. I do fry the meatballs with little oil and butter but you could make them, even more, healthier by cooking them in the oven or under the grill.

Can homemade Swedish meatballs be frozen?

Yes! Once your meatballs are cooked, allow them to cool completely before freezing. I like to place mine on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, making sure they’re not touching, and then pop them in the freezer. Once frozen, you can transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. When you’re ready to eat them, simply thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat in the oven or stovetop.

What’s the best way to reheat Swedish meatballs?

The best way to reheat Swedish meatballs is in a 180-degree c fan oven until heated through, about 10-15 minutes. You can also reheat them on the stove over low heat until warmed through. Be careful not to overcook the meatballs or they will start to dry out.

Are Swedish meatballs keto?

Yes, these meatballs are keto-friendly! To keep them low carb, simply omit the flour and use protein powder and serve with a low carb sauce or gravy. You could also serve them over zucchini noodles or cauliflower rice.

What are Swedish meatballs served with?

Swedish meatballs are traditionally served with mashed potatoes, gravy, and lingonberry jam. However, there are so many delicious ways to enjoy them! Try serving them over egg noodles (my son’s favourite), rice, or cauliflower rice. You could also serve them with a side of steamed vegetables, fries or a simple salad.

I like mine just with a sprinkling of grated cheese or a dollop of Greek yoghurt or creme fraiche! And a glass of red wine!
