How To Perfectly Roast Brussell Sprouts

Roasted Brussels sprouts have taken the culinary world by storm, and for good reason. These tiny, cabbage-like vegetables have shed their once-bad reputation and have become a beloved side dish for many.

When properly roasted, Brussels sprouts transform into crispy, caramelised nuggets of goodness with a tender interior that will keep you coming back for more. Their nutty, slightly sweet flavour is enhanced by the high-heat roasting process, which brings out the best in these humble vegetables.

  • Spray of oil

How to Perfectly Roast Brussels Sprouts

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 400ยฐF (200ยฐC). A hot oven is essential for creating crispy Brussels sprouts.

Step 2: Wash and trim the Brussels sprouts. Remove any yellow or wilted leaves and cut off the stem ends. If the sprouts are large, consider cutting them in half for even cooking.

Step 3: Pat the Brussels sprouts dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. Removing excess moisture helps achieve a crispy exterior.

Step 4: In a large bowl, toss the Brussels sprouts with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Make sure the sprouts are evenly coated.

Step 5: Arrange the Brussels sprouts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, making sure they are spread out in a single layer. This allows for even roasting and prevents the sprouts from steaming.

Step 6: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and roast the Brussels sprouts for 20-25 minutes. Halfway through the cooking time, shake the pan or use a spatula to flip the sprouts for even browning.

Step 7: Check the Brussels sprouts for doneness. They should be crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. If needed, roast for an additional 5-10 minutes until they reach your desired level of crispiness.

Step 8: Remove the roasted Brussels sprouts from the oven and transfer them to a serving dish. If desired, sprinkle with additional seasonings, such as garlic powder, red pepper flakes, or grated Parmesan cheese.

Serving Suggestion

For a delightful and healthy side dish, consider pairing your perfectly roasted Brussels sprouts with crispy roasted asparagus.

To prepare the asparagus, follow the same steps as for the Brussels sprouts, but adjust the cooking time to 12-15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the asparagus stalks.

Top Tips

  1. Choose Brussels sprouts that are similar in size for even cooking.
  2. Don’t overcrowd the baking sheet or roasting tin, as this can lead to steaming instead of roasting.
  3. Experiment with different seasonings and flavours, such as balsamic vinegar, honey, or smoked paprika.
  4. For extra crispy Brussels sprouts, try roasting them at a higher temperature (425ยฐF or 220ยฐC) for a shorter time.
  5. If you have leftovers, reheat them in the oven or a skillet to maintain their crispiness.

Storing Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Leftover roasted Brussels sprouts can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

To reheat, place them on a baking sheet in a preheated oven at 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) for 5-10 minutes, or until heated through and crispy.

Alternatively, you can reheat them in a frying pan over medium heat with a little olive oil until warmed and crispy.

Freezing Roasted Brussels Sprouts

While it’s possible to freeze roasted Brussels sprouts, keep in mind that the texture may change slightly upon thawing and reheating.

To freeze, allow the roasted sprouts to cool completely, then place them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Freeze until solid, about 1-2 hours.

Once frozen, transfer the sprouts to a freezer-safe container or resealable bag, removing as much air as possible. Label the container with the date and use within 2-3 months for the best quality.

To reheat frozen roasted Brussels sprouts, preheat your oven to 400ยฐF (200ยฐC). Arrange the frozen sprouts on a baking sheet and roast for 10-15 minutes, or until heated through and crispy.

Note that the texture may be slightly softer compared to freshly roasted Brussels sprouts.
