What Makes Burger Buns Soft and Fluffy?

Soft burger buns come from using the right balance of flour, fat (like butter or oil), milk, and sometimes eggs. Kneading the dough well and letting it rise fully also helps create that pillowy texture.

How Do You Make Burger Buns at Home?

To make burger buns at home, mix flour, yeast, salt, warm water and olive oil (full recipe further down the post). Knead the dough, let it rise, shape into balls, rise again, and bake until golden. It’s simple, and you probably have all the ingredients already!

Are Homemade Burger Buns Better Than Store-Bought?

Homemade burger buns are fresher, have fewer additives, and can be customized for size and softness. Plus, they taste better and make your burgers feel extra special.

How Can I Make Burger Buns Extra Soft?

For extra soft buns, use milk instead of water, add a bit more oil or butter, and brush the tops with melted butter right after baking. Letting the buns cool covered with a towel also helps keep them soft.

Ingredients

  • 600 g Strong White Flour
  • 150 g Strong Wholemeal Flour
  • 450 ml Warm Water
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 9 g Quick Action Yeast

Instructions

Add both flours to a bowl on your electric mixer. Add the yeast and salt and mix together. Make a well in the middle. Add a dough hook to the mixer.

Add the oil to the warm water in a measuring jug and slowly pour over it into the flour with the electric mixer turned on and mixing. Increase the power slightly and mix for about 3 – 5 minutes.

Make sure the dough is shaped into a ball. Spray or rub oil on the sides of the mixing bowl and cover with cling film. Leave to double in size, usually about an hour in a warm environment.

Knock the air out of the dough and roll into a sausage shape, rolling forwards and backwards. Using a cutter or long sharp knife divide into 12 pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and place them all onto greased baking trays. Cover with a proving bag and leave to rise for an hour or until doubled in size.

Preheat the oven to 210℃ FAN/ 230℃/410℉/ Gas 6. Spray each with oil and sprinkle sesame seeds and poppy seeds on top (optional)

Cook in the oven for 15 minutes until golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
