Ingredients
For the Filling:
- 2 tbsp Vegetable Oil
- 1 lrg Onion chopped
- 3 Celery Stalk chopped
- 750 g Minced Beef
- 3 tbsp Flour
- 300 ml Beef Stock
- 3 -4 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
- Salt and Pepper to taste
For the Cheesy Mash Topping:
- 750 g Potatoes Cut into chunks
- 100 g Butter
- 2 tbsp Hot Milk optional
- 125 g Cheddar Cheese grated – optional
Ingredient Notes
Vegetable Oil — Used to soften the vegetables and brown the mince. You can swap this for sunflower oil or even a knob of butter if you prefer.
Onion, Celery & Carrot — This classic combination of vegetables forms the flavour base of the filling. Make sure they are finely chopped so they cook evenly and blend nicely into the sauce.
Minced Beef — We recommend using a good quality minced beef with around 10-15% fat content for the best flavour. Too lean and the filling can taste a little dry.
Flour — This helps to thicken the sauce and give the filling that gorgeous rich, glossy consistency.
Beef Stock — Use a good quality beef stock for the best depth of flavour. Fresh stock or a good quality stock cube both work well here.
Worcestershire Sauce — This is what gives the filling that deep, savoury flavour that makes a great cottage pie. Don’t be tempted to skip it! Add 3-4 tablespoons depending on your taste.
Potatoes — A floury variety such as Maris Piper or King Edward works best for a smooth, creamy mash. Avoid waxy potatoes as they won’t mash as well.
Butter & Milk — These make the mash beautifully creamy and smooth. Use hot milk rather than cold for the best results.
Cheddar Cheese — This is optional but highly recommended! A good mature cheddar gives the mash topping a rich, cheesy flavour and creates that irresistible golden crust in the oven.
How to Make Cottage Pie With Cheesy Mash
- Heat the vegetable oil in a deep, wide frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chopped onion, celery and carrot and cook for 5 minutes until softened.
- Add the minced beef and black pepper to the pan and cook for around 5 minutes, stirring regularly, until the mince is browned all over.
- Sprinkle over the flour and stir for 1 minute to cook it out. Pour in the beef stock and Worcestershire sauce, season with salt and pepper and stir everything together well.
- Bring to the boil then reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is rich and thick.
- Meanwhile, cook the potatoes in a pan of boiling salted water for around 20 minutes or until tender when pierced with a fork. Drain well.
- Add the butter and hot milk to the drained potatoes and mash together until smooth and creamy. Stir through the grated cheddar cheese if using and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Spoon the meat filling into an ovenproof dish or divide between several smaller individual dishes.
- Spoon the cheesy mash over the top of the filling and spread evenly. Run a fork across the top to create ridges — this helps give you that lovely golden, crispy topping.
- Cook in a preheated oven at 200°c fan / 220°c / Gas 7 for 20 minutes until the mash topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling around the edges.
- Remove from the oven and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Serving Suggestions
Cottage Pie With Cheesy Mash is a hearty, filling meal that is wonderful served on its own but here are some great sides to serve alongside it:
- Steamed Green Vegetables — Peas, green beans or broccoli work beautifully alongside cottage pie and add a lovely pop of colour to the plate.
- Baked Beans — A classic pairing that kids especially love!
- Buttered Cabbage — Savoy cabbage lightly cooked in butter is a wonderful, traditional accompaniment.
- Crusty Bread — Perfect for mopping up that gorgeous rich sauce!
- Gravy — If you love extra sauce, a simple beef gravy poured over the top takes this dish to another level.
Storage & Reheating
Storing Your Cottage Pie Allow the cottage pie to cool completely before storing. Cover and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
Can I Freeze Cottage Pie With Cheesy Mash? Yes! Cottage pie freezes brilliantly. Once completely cooled, portion into freezer safe containers and freeze for up to 3 months. Defrost thoroughly in the fridge overnight before reheating.
Reheating Reheat in the oven at 180°c fan for 20-25 minutes until piping hot all the way through. You can also reheat individual portions in the microwave — heat on full power for 3-4 minutes, stirring halfway through, until completely heated through. Always make sure the pie is piping hot before serving.
Variations
Want to put your own spin on this classic recipe? Here are some ideas:
- Extra Vegetables — Bulk out the filling with mushrooms, peas or sweetcorn for extra flavour and texture.
- Swap the Cheese — Try Red Leicester or a mix of cheeses on top for a different flavour. A sprinkle of parmesan adds a lovely depth.
- Individual Portions — Divide the filling and mash between individual ovenproof dishes for a fun dinner party presentation.
- Add Herbs — Stir a teaspoon of thyme or rosemary into the filling for an extra layer of flavour.
- Swap the Mince — This recipe works just as well with lamb mince for a twist on the classic — technically making it a Shepherd’s Pie!
- Make it Gluten Free — Simply swap the plain flour for a gluten free alternative and use a gluten free Worcestershire sauce.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Cottage Pie and Shepherd’s Pie? The main difference is the meat used. Cottage Pie is made with minced beef while Shepherd’s Pie is made with minced lamb. Both are topped with mashed potato and baked in the oven.
What temperature do you cook Cottage Pie at? Cook your Cottage Pie in a preheated oven at 200°c fan / 220°c / Gas 7 for 20 minutes until the mash topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
How long does Cottage Pie take to make? From start to finish this recipe takes around 1 hour. The filling simmers for 30 minutes which gives you plenty of time to prepare the cheesy mash topping.
Can I make Cottage Pie ahead of time? Yes! This is a great make ahead meal. You can prepare the filling and mash, assemble the pie and then refrigerate it uncooked for up to 24 hours. When you are ready to eat, simply cook it in the oven as per the recipe, adding an extra 5-10 minutes to the cooking time as it will be going in cold.
Can I freeze Cottage Pie? Absolutely! Allow it to cool completely, then freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Defrost overnight in the fridge and reheat thoroughly before serving.
Why is my Cottage Pie filling too watery? If your filling is too watery it may not have simmered for long enough. Make sure you allow it to simmer uncovered for the last few minutes to allow some of the liquid to evaporate and the sauce to thicken up.
What potatoes are best for Cottage Pie topping? Floury potatoes such as Maris Piper or King Edward are best for a smooth, creamy mash topping. Avoid waxy varieties as they don’t mash as well and can result in a gluey texture.
Can I add cheese to Cottage Pie? Yes and we highly recommend it! Stir grated cheddar cheese through the mashed potato topping before spreading it over the filling. It creates a rich, cheesy flavour and a gorgeous golden crust when baked.
Can I make individual Cottage Pies? Yes! Simply divide the filling and mash between individual ovenproof dishes. They may need a couple of minutes less in the oven so keep an eye on them.
How do I stop my mash topping from sinking into the filling? Make sure your filling has thickened up well before topping with the mash. Spooning the mash carefully over the filling rather than pouring it helps too. You can also allow the filling to cool slightly before adding the mash topping.
