Easy Comforting Cottage Pie Recipe

Equipment

Ingredients
  

  • 2 tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • 1 lrg Onion (finely chopped)
  • 3 Celery Stalk (finely chopped)
  • 750 g Minced Beef
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper
  • 3 tbsp Flour
  • 300 ml Beef Stock
  • 3 -4 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • Salt to season

Topping

  • 750 g Potatoes (Cut into chunks)
  • 100 g Butter
  • 2 tbsp Hot Milk (optional)
  • 125 g Cheddar Cheese (grated - optional)

Instructions
 

  • Heat the oil in a deep wide frying pan and add the onion, cook for 5 minutes or until soft. Add the minced beef and black pepper and cook for 5 minutes until browned.
  • Add the flour and stir for 1 minute. Add the stock, and Worcestershire sauce, season with salt and pepper, and bring to the boil. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Meanwhile cook the potatoes in boiling water for 20 minutes or until tender. Drain and add butter and milk. Mash together until soft. Stir in the cheese if you are using and add salt and pepper to taste.
  • Spoon the meat into an oven proof dish or several small ones.
  • Top with the mashed potato and cook in a pre-heated oven at 200°c fan/220°c/Gas 7 for 20 minutes until the potato topping is golden brown.
