Heat the oven to 150°c/Gas 2. Grease and base line a deep loose-based tin with baking paper.
Put all the ingredients in a food mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and mix on low speed to combine the ingredients, then increase the speed for 1 minute until nice and smooth. If it feels too thick add some more milk to loosen it.
Pour into the tin and smooth the top to level. Bake in the oven for about 55 minutes to 1 hour. Remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then turn out on a wire rack. Leave to cool completely.
If adding buttercream, gently slice the cake into two halves and evenly spread the buttercream on one half. Add the rest to the top of the cake and finish off with a few sprinkles.
